Chanel Smith

With more than 20 years of Operational and Organizational leadership, Chanel brings a passion for service and support to communities and people that have been disinvested in and marginalized. Driven by a desire to bring innovative ideas and ways of working to high-impact social programming initiatives, Chanel focuses on providing high-quality services framed in continuous quality improvement, collaboration and partnership, training and development, advocacy, and a trauma-informed and restorative justice approach. Chanel has successfully implemented multi-generational, and multi-ethnic programs that delivered year- over-year growth and supported long-term workforce satisfaction.

Chanel’s prior experience includes the West Side United Economic Vitality Program Manager, where she oversaw the strategic development and implementation of 4 Career Pathway Programs under JPMorgan Chase’s Advancing Cities initiative. Chanel understands the value of partnerships and has developed several strong relationships with healthcare providers, education providers, the faith community, businesses, government agencies, and others working together to coordinate and share positive outcomes for individuals pursuing short- and long-term employment goals.

Prior to this assignment, she worked for UCAN, successfully implementing a youth vocational training program, and developing and facilitating youth job readiness training workshops including career exploration, skill development, employment search & interviewing, resume development, professionalism, social media responsibility, and job retention skills. She has also been a Career Specialist, providing career development advisement and coaching with a proven record of exceeding funder expectations.

Chanel describes herself as a dynamic servant leader and DE&I professional, who is enthusiastic about creating and supporting fair spaces and developing systems to connect people to opportunities creating economic vitality and achieving organizational goals.

Currently, as the Managing Director of Workforce Development Programs with Heartland Human Care Services, Chanel oversees four transitional job programs dedicated to reducing inequities across social indicators. Services are focused on community violence intervention and reduction, urban agriculture, drug diversion, and addressing homelessness. Heartland’s transitional jobs program looks to prepare and support long-term viable career pathways for individuals, building economic vitality and stability, and long-term investment in a better quality of life for individuals and their families.
