Cardinal Seán O’Malley and Monsignor Lorenzo Albacete were friends for decades, starting before the latter entered the seminary. Though their particular paths in the Church diverged – O’Malley became the Archbishop of Boston and Albacete went on to lead the Communion and Liberation movement in the U.S. -- they shared a passion not only for the rich tradition of Catholic culture and thought but also for addressing the urgent question of how to live a Christian life in a postmodern era. The publication of a posthumous collection of some of Albacete’s most brilliant talks and essays -- “The Relevance of the Stars: Christ, Culture, Destiny” -- provides a perfect opportunity to reflect on the Mystical Monsignor’s legacy as a theologian, pastor, and public intellectual. The editors of “The Relevance of the Stars” – Lisa Lickona and Gregory Wolfe – engaged in a lively conversation with Cardinal O’Malley about the life and legacy of Monsignor Albacete.

Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley, OFM Cap. is the ninth bishop and sixth archbishop in the more than 200 year history of the Archdiocese of Boston. Pope Benedict XVI elevated him to cardinal at the consistory held March 24, 2006 and gave him the titular church of Santa Maria della Vittoria. The Holy Father also named him a member of the Congregation for the Clergy and the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. During a trip to Rome to take formal possession of his titular church in September 2006, Cardinal O’Malley became the first cardinal in the world to launch a personal blog, cardinalseansblog.org, which he continues to update weekly. Shortly after Pope Francis’s March 2013 election, the Holy Father selected Cardinal O’Malley to be the only North American member of his council of cardinals — commonly called the “group of nine” or simply the “G9” — who advise the Holy Father on the restructuring of the Roman Curia.

Lisa Lickona recently joined the faculty at Saint Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry in Rochester, New York, as Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology. Prior to that she served for eight years as Editor for Saints at Magnificat magazine while managing a micro-organic farm and raising her large family. Lisa received her B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and the M.T.S and S.T.L. from the  Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. She writes and speaks on issues in theological anthropology and the lives of the saints and is the co-editor of The Relevance of the Stars by Monsignor Lorenzo Albacete.
 

Gregory Wolfe is the publisher and editor of Slant Books. In 1989 he founded Image—one of America’s leading literary journals, which he edited for thirty years. He was also the founding director of the Seattle Pacific University MFA in Creative Writing program. Wolfe’s writing has appeared in numerous publications, including the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, First Things, Commonweal, and America. In 2005 he was a judge for the National Book Awards. His books include Beauty Will Save the World, Intruding Upon the Timeless, and The Operation of Grace. He is married to the novelist Suzanne M. Wolfe.
