Patrick M. Green, EdD, serves as the Executive Director (and Founding Director) of the Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Scholarship (CELTS) at Loyola University Chicago, overseeing the service-learning, academic internships, undergraduate research, and learning portfolio programs. Dr. Green also serves as the Director of Engaged Learning, in which he supports the University Engaged Learning requirement, facilitating faculty professional development programs that foster learning innovation and experiential pedagogical strategies for curricular enhancement.
Teaching Roles: Dr. Green serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Education at Loyola University Chicago. Dr. Green teaches a variety of general elective experiential learning courses, engaging students in community-based learning, community-based research, international service-learning, internship experiences, and undergraduate research. Each of the courses meet the Engaged Learning University Requirement at Loyola University Chicago. He also teaches in the Higher Education Program in the School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago. He has engaged with students through international service-learning in Italy, Peru, El Salvador, and Ghana. He has launched numerous experiential learning programs including social justice research fellowships, community-based research programs, a social justice internship program, undergraduate research programs, academic internship programs, and service-learning partnerships.
Scholar-Administrator: Dr. Green was recently awarded the 2022 Barbara A. Holland Scholar-Administrator Award by the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU). This prestigious award "honors a bold, mid-career scholar-administrator whose leadership and intellectual voice illuminates the transformative power of urban and metropolitan higher education. Holland Scholars are respected, strategic leaders across their institution who are known for contributing to cutting-edge research related to their administrative role." Green was honored with an award presentation at the 2022 CUMU Annual Conference in San Diego, CA.
Various Leadership Roles: Dr. Green has served in many leadership roles at Loyola, including on the Provost Search Committee (2018-2020) and the University Strategic Planning Committee (2019-2021). Dr. Green most recently served as the search chair for the Associate Vice President for Student Success (2021-2022). During Fall 2019 through Winter 2020, for over a year, Dr. Green served in the leadership position as the Interim Assistant Provost for Student Academic Services. During this period, he worked with the staff to launch a university-wide student success technology platform, re-cast the First Year Text reading program to a University-wide reading program entitled Rambler Read, shift to online academic support services, facilitate the successful reapplication of the federal student support services (TRIO) grant, advocate for and approve multiple full-time positions, elevate career services, and reorganize the unit within the Office of the Provost, focused on student success and retention.
Educational Background: Dr. Green received his B.A. in history and literature with an Honors Liberal Arts degree from Loras College summa cum laude (Dubuque, IA), M.A. in history from Marquette University (Milwaukee, WI), and his doctorate in Educational Leadership and Organizational Change from Roosevelt University (Chicago, IL), specializing in leadership in higher education. Dr Green has numerous certifications accomplished through the completion of trainings, including the SEE Experiential Education Academy, the ABCD Institute, and the Project on Civic Reflection. He serves as a faculty member with the Experiential Education Academy of the Society for Experiential Education.
Research and Scholarship: Dr. Green focused his research on experiential education, specifically the intersection of teaching and learning with community-based learning, community-engaged pedagogy, and high-impact learning practices. As a scholar-administrator and learning innovation professional, Dr. Green has engaged in scholarly writing informed by his years of experience and practice in the higher education field. He currently serves as Carnegie Community Engagement Consultant, supporting institutions of higher education seeking to achieve the Carnegie Community Engagement elective classification, as well as Carnegie Reviewer. Dr. Green led the successful reclassification process for Loyola University Chicago in 2008, 2015, and 2024.
Dr. Green has published many scholarly articles in many outlets. In spring 2024, he moderated a roundtable session entitled Defining Experiential Education with David and Alice Kolb (experiential learning theory) and George Kuh (High Impact Learning Practices) in Experiential Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ELTHE), the premier journal of the Society for Experiential Education. In summer 2023, Dr. Green assumed the role as Editor of Metropolitan Universities journal, the premier journal of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU). In the most recent issue, the introduction, entitled Enhancing Scholarship and Research through Praxis to Build the Field offers readers an overview of the new scholarly category of Praxis launched by the journal, launched under Dr. Green's leadership with the editorial board.
In the fall and winter of 2023, Dr. Green served as the Special Focus Guest Editor for the International Journal of Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IJRSLCE), including co-authoring the Introduction, as well as Exploring New Lines of Inquiry for the Special Focus on the Practitioner-Scholar Community section. He also served as Guest Editor, Jesuit Higher Education Journal, Special Issue on Imagination and Hope in Jesuit Education published in winter 2023 with a featured introduction and praxis article entitled An Inquiry into Hope and Imagination in Jesuit Education: Ignatian Design Thinking as a Lens for Exploration.
His research has led to multiple publications and his scholarship has led to numerous presentations at national and international conferences. Dr. Green also served on advisory boards for a number of non-profit organizations. Dr. Green serves as an Engaged Scholar with National Campus Compact and served as the past Chair of the Board of Directors of the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSCLE). He currently serves as the Scholar-in-Residence with IARSLCE developing the Practitioner Scholar Community curriculum around developing the role of practitioner-scholar and contributing to the field through knowledge-making artifacts that emerge from inquiry into practice. In addition, Dr. Green serves as an Engaged Scholar with the Society for Experiential Education (formerly NSEE), facilitating the SEE Fellows program, leading national collaborative partnerships, and fostering scholarly projects focused on experiential education. He was recently nominated and elected to serve on the Board of SEE, September 2021 - 2025.
