Sexual Assault Awareness Month

2018: Embrace Your Voice

In the United States April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities on how to prevent it.

The events for SAAM 2018 focused around the theme of embracing your voice and empowering survivors and allies.

Self Care Craft Night

Students practiced self-care by participating in a craft night, where they made friendship bracelets, decorated rocks to assist in grounding practices, and colored patterns with consent messaging.

Survivor Ally Training

Students received training on how to be a supportive friend or partner to a survivor of sexual assault. They learned skill to support and empower friends who disclose experience with gender-based violen through allyship, emotional support, and tangible aid.

Embrace Your Voice: Zeke Thomas

‌To close out SAAM, Zeke Thomas (DJ, Producer, Sexual Assault Victim's Rights Advocate, and son of NBA Legend Isiah Thomas) came to campus to speak about the intersections of gender-based violence, male survivorship, communities of color, and LGBTQIA+ communities. This Safe Haven event was co-sponsored by Q-Initiatives, LUCES, and Brothers for Excellence.
