Loyola Professors recognized with Outstanding Book Award
The Curriculum Foundations Reader (Palgrave, 2020), written by Drs. Ann Marie Ryan, Charles Tocci, and Seungho Moon, has been awarded “Outstanding Book” in 2022 by the Society of Professors of Education.
The Reader brings readers into classrooms and communities to explore critical curriculum issues in the United States throughout the twentieth century by focusing in on the voices of teachers, administrators, students, and families. Framed by an enduring question about curriculum, each chapter begins with an essay briefly reviewing the history of topics such as student resistance, sociopolitical and culturally-centered curricula, curriculum choice, the place and space of curriculum, linguistic policies for sustaining cultural heritages, and grading and assessment.
The Society of Professors of Education was founded in 1902 as a professional and academic association open to all persons engaged in teacher preparation, curriculum studies, educational foundations, and related activities. The Society’s primary goal is to provide a forum for consideration of major issues, tasks, problems, and challenges confronting professional educators. SPE is an interdisciplinary organization. Its members include both scholars and practitioners in education. Founding members included John Dewey, Charles DeGarmo, and Walter B. Jacobs. Several other noteworthy early members were William Kilpatrick, George S. Counts, Elwood P. Cubberley, Harold O. Rugg, Edward L. Thorndike, and George Herbert Mead, symbolizing the diverse interests and ideological variety of the organization. Its current members include several award-winning theoreticians, researchers, and practitioners in education.
