The Wozniak Lecture Series was established in 2009 to recognize Dr. Wozniak's contributions to the University and school as founding dean for the School of Education. The lecture has presented keynotes from various speakers in the field of education for the last 10 years, ranging from schools reform, racial inequality, and gender and education.

Emily Greytak, PhD
Emily Greytak (she/her), PhD, is a queer activist, researcher, and parent, with over two decades of advocacy and scholarship on LGBTQ+-inclusive education. She brings an intersectional lens and critical perspectives to curriculum, professional development, and policy. Previously, as the Research Director at GLSEN (formerly, the Gay & Lesbian Education Network), she spearheaded groundbreaking projects, including the first national study of transgender students, in-depth examinations into teacher education, and an assessment of the bullying policies of all U.S. school districts. She’s also worked in partnerships with local school districts on LGBTQ-inclusive professional development efforts, and advised the federal and state governments on youth research. Currently, Emily serves as the inaugural Director of Research for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) leading research on civil rights and civil liberties issues, including education equity topics such as the school-to-prison pipeline and discriminatory dress codes. She teaches a course on LGBTQ+ youth at Brooklyn College’s School of Education and proudly serves on the Curriculum Committee of NYC Drag Story Hour. Her research is regularly cited in the media and she is the author of numerous publications, including the upcoming SAGE Encyclopedia entry on LGBTQ+ education bans.

We’ve Been Here Before: Two Steps Forward, One Giant Leap Back for LGBTQ+ Inclusion
Between book bans, curriculum restrictions, and assaults on trans youth identities and care, the current political moment may seem not only insurmountable but also unprecedented. But it’s not. We’ve Been Here Before will break down the current political landscape of LGBTQ+ education within the context of history and the connection to other education equity movements. Only by reflecting on our past, can we truly understand the tactics used to undermine inclusion and how they can - and have been - overcome.

Representation (isn’t all that) Matters: Intersectional & Intentional Inclusion in LGBTQ+ Education
Join us for an engaging roundtable discussion that dives deep into LGBTQ+ inclusion in preK-12 education. A panel of experienced educators and school leaders will share real-world insights and experiences, highlighting both the missteps and successes in implementing inclusive practices across curriculum, pedagogy, and policy. We’ll go beyond the good intentions and examine inclusion where the rubber meets the road. Gain valuable tools to guide your professional practice and decision-making, avoiding potential pitfalls and ensuring that efforts are truly inclusive of all LGBTQ+ students and families.

Meeting the Moment in LGBTQ+ Education: Reexamining the Narratives and Redirecting our Role
Meeting the Moment delves into the complex landscape of LGBTQ+ education in today's society to explore key questions: What does LGBTQ+ inclusive education look like today? What can it look like in the future? And how do we get there? Examining the historical and contemporary context, we’ll reconsider the stories we’ve been told, and the ones that we are telling. This keynote will challenge simplistic narratives and lay out common pitfalls of well-intentioned practices, including white washing, single-story narratives, and individual-centric approaches. By emphasizing the importance of moving beyond superficial efforts and centering an intersectional and systemic approach, this lecture will help each of us identify the next steps on our own journey of inclusion.

Dr. John M. Wozniak
Dr. John Wozniak joined the faculty of Loyola University Chicago in 1950. One year later, he was made acting chair of the Department of Education. He served for 18 years in that capacity until the founding of the School of Education in 1969, when he became dean, a position he held for 10 years. John was a remarkable educator, scholar, mentor, colleague, and friend to all those passing through the School of Education. Dr. Wozniak retired in 1984 and remained active in the School of Education alumni events until his death in 2013.
