Spring 2025: Teaching with Love, Justice, and Human Dignity

Teaching with Love, Justice, & Human Dignity is FCIP’s Spring ‘25 Anti-Oppressive Pedagogy Program series. Join us for our film discussion, Book Club series, and/or our Accountability Circle as we explore and engage with our Ignatian practices and Jesuit values as they relate to encountering love and justice in teaching and learning at the university. 

Film Discussion 

Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution 

  • In the early 1970s, teenagers with disabilities faced a future shaped by isolation, discrimination and institutionalization. Camp Jened, a ramshackle camp “for the handicapped” (a term no longer used) in the Catskills, exploded those confines. Jened was their freewheeling Utopia, a place with summertime sports, smoking and make-out sessions awaiting everyone, and campers experienced liberation and full inclusion as human beings. Their bonds endured as many migrated West to Berkeley, California — a hotbed of activism where friends from Camp Jened realized that disruption, civil disobedience, and political participation could change the future for millions.

  • Emergent Strategy by Adrienne Maree Brown is a book that explores how complex systems and patterns arise from simple interactions. Inspired by Octavia Butler, the book offers a materialist "spirituality" based on science and science fiction. It discusses principles such as interdependence, decentralization, and resilience, aiming to shape the futures we want to live. 

 

Conversation Circle (Accountability Circle): How Might We Practice Human Dignity in Action? 

  • Teaching with Love, Justice, & Human Dignity is FCIP’s Spring '25 Anti-Oppressive Pedagogy Programming series. Join us for our Spring Conversation Circle with the discussion topic, "How Might We Practice Human Dignity in Action?" as we explore and engage with our Ignatian practices and Jesuit values as they relate to encountering love, justice, and accountability in teaching and learning at the university.
