The Art of Collage

November 13, 2010 – January 16, 2011

Under the guidance of art teacher Julianna Palm, elementary students at Rogers Park Montessori School, located on the north side of Chicago, have created collages exploring positive and negative space. They played with the technique of "painting with scissors" in the style of Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954) to express ideas of autumn, peace, color, and composition. Ranging from 6 to 9 years old, students learned to express a feeling or tell a story with juxtapositions of color and shape while layering various pieces to make a whole composition. They made their artwork by first designing their own paper and then adding various colored pieces to balance their collages.
