First Year Research Experience Success

Congratulations to all of the students who have participated in the FYRE (First Year Research Experience) program! These students were taught how to perform complex statistical analysis, worked hard to gather and input data and created a professional-quality poster to present in a public Symposium.

During the Spring semester, the ten first-year students were taught how to perform a complete, start-to-finish statistical data analysis. They were also exposed to data resources and computer software typically used by statistical researchers. The students were divided into five pairs, according to their research interests, and were asked to complete a full statistical research project on a topic of their choice. Topics this year included mapping Chicago crime, movie revenue trends, coffee shop comparisons, earthquake locations, and short-term memory techniques. During the intensive, three-week summer program, the students worked hard to gather and input data into the R software for statistical analyses and graphics. Each pair created a professional-quality technical poster which was displayed during a public poster symposium (which showcased posters from the statistics and math sections), as well as during the FYRE graduation ceremony.

Student posters from the event can be accessed at Dr. Balderama's webpage, under the "Advising" category: http://webpages.math.luc.edu/~ebalderama/service.html
