Family Nurse Practitioner with Emergency specialty

At Loyola Nursing, we offer the specialized training you will need to effectively manage and treat patients in high-stress settings. In fact, Loyola is the only DNP program in the Chicago area offering a Family Nurse Practitioner track with Emergency specialty. Graduates of Loyola's Emergency FNP track complete 525 clinical practicum hours in the emergency department. We also offer a dedicated procedures course, essential for preparing you to practice.

  • Prioritize and triage patients in the Emergency Department and other emergent settings
  • Conduct advanced physical assessments and health histories
  • Educate patients of all age groups on disease prevention and healthy lifestyle measures
  • Develop treatment plans for acute illness and chronic disease management
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage episodic illnesses, injuries, and acute exacerbation of chronic disease in which patient’s seek out emergent care
  • Conduct emergency care procedures for common and complex illnesses and injuries
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests and screening evaluations
  • Prescribe medications and other therapies
  • Manage overall patient care, including issues related to aging and development
  • Analyze trends, issues, and evidence in health care and health care systems
  • Engage in public health emergency preparedness and response efforts
  • Integrate the best evidence and patient preferences into the development, delivery, and evaluation of care

Curriculum

 

For BSN-prepared nurses, completing the FNP with Emergency specialty takes approximately four to five years, depending on your level of entry. Most courses are offered online with some on-site courses held at the Loyola University Chicago Health Science Campus.

Clinical Experience

Faculty design and secure all clinical rotations for students. Loyola maintains academic-practice partnerships throughout the Chicago metropolitan area with a focus on serving communities with high needs. 

  • 525 clinical hours in primary care (family, adult and pediatrics focused)
  • 525 clinical hours in emergency department

You must be a Registered Nurse with a baccalaureate or master's degree in nursing to apply. Admission is competitive and based on the strength of application materials and interview.
