Please read through the latest newsletter to learn about two upcoming parties: Physics Friendsgiving and the Physics Holiday Party. I know the calendar only says November, but it is time to start planning for summer. Students in their second year or higher should definitely explore the REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) listings on our website. Applications portals for these summer research programs will open soon, and there are more programs in here. Plus read about fusion energy and when it may become a reality.
Department Events
- We will have our next Physics Colloquium on Thursday, November 21, at 2:30 p.m. in CS-200. Our speaker is Prof. Meenakshi Wadhwa, presenting on Exploration of the Solar System via Sample Return Missions. Wadhwa is the Director of the School of Earth and Space Exploration and a Foundation and Regents Professor at Arizona State University.
- Physics Club and Women in Physics will be hosting Physics Friendsgiving on Friday, November 22nd at 4:30 PM. All students and staff are invited to share a meal together before Thanksgiving break.
- Celebrate the end of the semester at the Department’s annual Holiday Party on Friday, December 6th on the 4th Floor of Information Commons. There will lots of food, game, music by the physics student band, and lots more. Please let Matt know by Wednesday. All physics students are invited!

- The Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium(URES) will be held April 5, 2025. Students can begin registering their projects now through March 2, 2025.

- The US Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is excited to announce the next edition of the RENEW-HEP USCMS SPRINT/ USCMS PURSUE combined undergraduate internship program. There will be informational webinars on Webinar on either November 19, 2024 (4-6pm US Central) or December 3, 2024 (4-6pm US Central). You can register here.
- The Washington University St Louis Department of Electrical Engineering has organized a series of virtual information sessions where you can connect with faculty, students, and admissions staff. At the electrical & systems engineering department, you can excel in cutting-edge research areas such as robotics, machine learning, quantum technologies, nanophotonics, optics, artificial intelligence, and control systems, among others. Our department is recognized for its inclusive environment, cutting-edge research, and supportive community. - The University of Pittsburgh Department of Physics and Astronomy Graduate Program Information Session on Monday November 25, 2024 3:00-5:00PM (EST). Register for Zoom Session here.
- Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) staff will host an informational application webinar at 1:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday, December 10. This one-hour-max Zoom session (register here) will provide an overview of the program and guidance for applying. Senior undergraduates are eligible to apply who plan full-time, uninterrupted study toward a Ph.D. at an accredited U.S. university in or by fall 2025. Benefits include: $45,000 yearly stipend, payment of full tuition and required fees, yearly program review participation, an annual professional development allowance, and a 12-week DOE laboratory research practicum

- IceCube Neutrino Observatory is are hiring two “winterovers” who will be deployed to the South Pole, Antarctica, to operate and maintain the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Training for two candidates is anticipated to begin in Madison, WI, in August 2025. Deployment to the South Pole is expected to be in October or November 2025 for 12 to 13 months with no possibility of leaving until the end of deployment. Expertise will be balanced between the two candidates over the range of skills required. Individuals must develop a good working knowledge of the entire system. - Michigan State University will host the 9th Nuclear Science Summer School (NS3) from May 11 to May 17, 2025. This program is specifically designed for undergraduate students and aims to provide participants with an introduction to the fields of nuclear science and nuclear astrophysics. The NS3 will include a series of lectures and activities covering selected topics in nuclear science and nuclear astrophysics, offering a comprehensive overview of the field. The sessions will be conducted in person and led by esteemed researchers based at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). This initiative is funded by the National Science Foundation. Summer Opportunities
- The Michigan State University 2025 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Physics is scheduled to take place from May 27th to August 1st . The application deadline is February 7, 2025. - The Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program at St. Jude Hospital offers a unique opportunity for pre-doctoral students preparing for careers in the biomedical sciences, medicine, and pharmacy to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. POE students will have the opportunity to be considered for admission to the Jude Graduate School upon completion of their undergraduate degree. All POE program applicants must already have research experience and be full time students at the time they apply. Applicants must be United States citizens, non-citizen nationals, or possess a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States (required by the funding agency). All must be in at least their college sophomore year of college at the time they apply. POE medical students spend a minimum of 10 weeks in the program. The minimum tenure requirement for all others is 11 weeks. All POE applicants must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.40 (on a 4.0 scale) in math and science (biology, chemistry, and physics) and at least a 3.40 overall. Program participants will receive a $600/week subsistence allowance. Fully furnished group housing will be provided at no cost for non-local participants. The POE home page contains links to the program application. The deadline for receipt of all 2025 application materials is February 1, 2025. Early application and submission of materials is highly recommended.

The internships will offer female and minoritized undergraduate students an opportunity to perform a project under the mentorship of scientists working at the frontier of physics at one of the 50+ institutions in the United States. Students will use computational tools and data-science methods to learn about fundamental particles and their interactions by analyzing data obtained from the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) located at CERN, Switzerland and/or participating in CMS hardware/software projects. The program will last a period of 10 weeks between May 27, 2025, and August 2, 2025. Students will be paid $600 per week during the 10 weeks of the internship. The internship will be offered in-person mode. For those selected for the internship, housing will be provided. The application will open around the middle of December and until Feb 1, 2025. - The Purdue University Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) is a pathway to graduate education at Purdue University. This program is designed to provide equal access and opportunities to prepare students for their graduate studies by offering eight-weeks intensive research experiences, and resources that contribute to student's professional and academic growth. The program is open to participants from all disciplines. More information about the program can be found here.

- Northwestern University is accepting applications to the Applied Physics Graduate Program for Fall 2025 enrollment. You can learn about their program at their website. Their program offers a wide range of PhD research opportunities in Applied Quantum Physics, Interface Science, Soft Condensed Matter, Magnetism, Structure and Self-Organization of Biological Molecules, Mineral Physics and Photonics. They provide students with a very competitive 12 month stipend, 5 years of minimum guaranteed funding, paid health, dental and vision insurance and a full tuition scholarship. See 2024-25 PhD student stipend information here. The deadline for Fall 2025 enrollment is Friday Dec. 20, 2024. GRE General and Physics tests are not required.
- The University of Missouri, Columbia, offers both MS and PhD degrees in Physics. The department has active research programs in Astronomy/Astrophysics, Biological Physics, and Condensed Matter Physics. The graduate program benefits from strong connections to several important campus resources including the MU Materials Science and Engineering Institute, state-of-the-art Electron Microscopy Core, and the MU Research Reactor (MURR).
