Loyola Students Earn Awards at WEST Conference
Archdeacon and Kothadia completing fieldwork in Peru
Loyola students Natalie Archdeacon and Aman Kothadia each recently took home honors at the Water and Environment Student Talks (WEST Conference). The conference is hosted by the University of British Columbia and invites students from various disciplines to present research focused on understanding future challenges associated with water.
Archdeacon, a junior studying social work and women's studies, presented her research titled "Intergenerational Effects of Water Insecurity." She drew upon data from a larger project by Dr. Paula Tallman, assistant professor of anthropology at Loyola.
Kothadia, a junior studying anthropology and public health, presented his work, "Are WASH-related Stressors a Form of Violence?" Judges named Kothadia's the "Best Presentation" of the session and Archdeacon's the "Runner Up Best Presentation." Their success was amplified by the fact that the two juniors were competing against Ph.D. and Masters students in their respective categories.
Archdeacon and Kothadia traveled to Peru to complete fieldwork related to their presentations. They hope to present their findings at the American Anthropological Association in November and will be co-authors aon a related manuscript scheduled for publishing later this year.
Archdeacon, Kothadia, and Dr. Tallman's research received funding from Loyola University Chicago's School of Social Work, College of Arts and Sciences, Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health, CAS Undergraduate Research Experience, and the Department of Anthropology Student Research Award.
