Supporting sustainable food Systems: local partnerships in action
Loyola’s School of Environmental Sustainability is home to five interdisciplinary groups studying critical environmental challenges. The five focus areas are biodiversity, environment and society, environmental health and toxicology, sustainable food systems, and climate and energy. Focus area groups include faculty members, students, and staff.
The Sustainable Food Systems Focus Area concentrates on sustainable food production, food equity, and food justice. Team members launched the Partners in the Chicago Food System program to help increase food security in Chicago communities. As part of the program, Loyola researchers are working with community organizations to understand food insecurity in Chicago and discover opportunities for Loyola to support local food justice efforts.
With support from a Schreiber Innovation Grant, the program also created paid student internships with community groups working on food equity. Student interns provide skilled labor for the organizations while gaining valuable hands-on experience working in the community.
