"The Anthropologist" Film Screening and Q&A with Dr. Susie Crate
In concert with the Loyola's Climate Change Conference, Dr. Crate will host a screening of *The Anthropologist,* a film that is part biographical story of daughters and their anthropologist mothers, as well as a tour of indigenous communities contemplating relocation from traditional homes as a result of climate change. The screening will be Friday, March 16, from 11:15-1:00 in the Damen Cinema.
Dr. Grauer Elected President of AAPA, to Receive 2018 Lasker Award
Anthropology Chair Anne Grauer has been elected President of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists. At the AAPA meeting in April, Dr. Grauer will also be receiving the Gabriel W. Lasker Service Award for her history of excellent service to the AAPA and the field of physical anthropology.

In late November, Kathleen Adams traveled to Santa Fe to examine materials at the Museum of International Folk Art, photo-documenting a Toraja effigy of the dead as part of a digital repatriation project.
Students Attend Umbanda Religious Ceremony with Prof. Penglase in Brazil
Prof. Ben Penglase, who is teaching in a USAC study-abroad program in Florianópolis, Brazil, took students to an Umbanda religious ceremony at the Ilê de Xangô center, where priests also gave a short talk about the African roots of the Brazilian religions Candomblé and Umbanda.

Bringing art to life
Anthropology students are taking a hands-on approach to help curate a new LUMA exhibition about Indonesian puppets. “It’s fun because this isn’t something, at least from my experience, most people really know about,” said Liz Bajjalieh, an anthropology major. “I’m taking this little shadow puppet from a little corner of the world, so an entire other world of people can experience it.”

Dr. Paula Tallman Publishes Two Articles on Health and Nutrition in the Amazon
Working in the Peruvian Amazon with then undergraduate student Giuliana Sanchez-Samaniego, new faculty member Dr. Paula Skye Tallman found that indigenous Awajún community members were suffering from a "dual burden" of both under and over-nutrition (Tallman et al., 2021). Giuliana Sanchez-Samaniego took their research one step further by examining what community members were eating. She found that the diversity of traditional Awajún diets has substantially decreased and been replaced with carbohydrate-heavy market foods (Sanchez-Samaniego et al., 2021), potentially explaining the trends they found in dietary health. Giuliana is now pursuing her PhD on cardiovascular health in the Peruvian Andes and continues to work with Dr. Tallman.
