Practicing Gratitude and Expressing Appreciation: Science and Practice

Cultivating gratitude is crucial for your physical and mental health and is vital for building a successful business. Research shows that gratitude increases happiness, improves health, strengthens relationships, and boosts self-confidence while reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. This session explored how gratitude impacts the body and brain, ancient gratitude practices, and included a guided gratitude meditation. Developing a habit of gratitude will foster a culture of collaboration, trust, and respect in family and business.

Builds: A culture of appreciation and recognition, better relationships, life satisfaction, mental and physical health.

Insights:
Connection to oneself is the foundation for connecting with others.
Gratitude unites us—it is universal, not divisive.
If you can’t be grateful for what you’ve received, be thankful for what you’ve been spared.

Suggested action - keep two daily lists:
1. Things that brought you joy, meaning, or fulfillment.
2. People who did something you’re grateful for and what it was.

Recording these moments throughout the day helps you relive them and stay mindful.

Setting Intentions and Resolutions for the New Year for Effective Family Business and Personal Outcomes

The session explored the art and science of setting resolutions that stick, drawing on research about willpower and brain science. Participants reflected on the past year and discovered how to set authentic intentions for the future, learning to create goals that energize and focus them for personal and business success.

Builds: Willpower, accountability, optimism, better health outcomes, self-compassion, focus, and success.

Insights:
Set intentions instead of making resolutions.

Stay humble. There is a lot of information coming at you all the time so your mind must be selective about what it observes/remembers.

There are 4 things that impact what it recalls:
1. The sound of your name being called out.
2. Anything that threatens your safety.
3. Romantic interests.
4. Whatever you tell your brain is important to you.

Willpower is the ability to do what matters to you. It works best when you are well-reseted.
If you don't want to do something, rephrase from I WON'T to I WILL...
The most powerful form of willpower is I WANT...
"When you know what's important, you know what's not important."

Make a list: What do you WANT for yourself and for you business?
State those intentions in a direct, simple and positive way.
On each point written, say HOW it coming true will make you feel and HOW it will allow you to better contribute to the world.

Review your intentions in mid-Dec of the following year to determine their status.
Patience is key to running a successful business.
