About
His Honour Judge Anthony Leonard QC is a Senior Circuit Judge at London’s Central Criminal Court, better known as the “Old Bailey.” He was called to the Bar in 1978 and specialised in prosecuting and defending in a wide variety of criminal cases. In 1999, he was appointed to the high honor as Queen’s Counsel. During his career, Judge Leonard has served in the following capacities:
- Standing Counsel to the Inland Revenue (1993-1999),
- Recorder (part time judge) (2000).
- Past vice chairman of the Professional Conduct and Complaints Committee of the Bar
- Appointed a Circuit Judge in 2009.
- 2009-10: Itinerant Murder Judge on the South Eastern Circuit.
- 2011-17; Southwark Crown Court trying long and complex fraud cases. Deputy Resident Judge.
- 2013-: Additional Judge in the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division).
- 2017-: Senior Circuit Judge at the Central Criminal Court trying murder and terrorism cases.
Other appointments include Chancellor of the Diocese of Ely, Deputy Chancellor of the Diocese of St Edmundsbury, and Commissary to the Archbishop of Canterbury, hearing complaints against Public Notaries. He has served as Tutor judge at the Judicial College. Judge Leonard is a former consultee for the Criminal Procedure Rules Committee. He is an advocacy teacher for the Inner Temple Inn of Court (past Chairman of Advocacy), and at Oxford. He has also taught advocacy in Chicago (NITA and American Inns of Court), The Hague, Montenegro, Tanzania. Jamaica and in Loyola’s summer program in Rome (2017). Spoken at criminal law conferences in Sri Lanka and China. Importantly, Judge Leonard has been an important teacher and resource in Loyola’s London Comparative Advocacy Program since its inception in 1988.
