About

Dr. Sommers is a board-certified anesthesiologist and lawyer. He was a health care consultant, with several years of law practice experience. He was one of the founding partners of Unified Anesthesia Services LLC, and co-founder and former partner in Strategic Healthcare Group LLC, a leading provider of blood management consulting, education and informatics solutions for hospitals, healthcare systems, and blood collection operations across the United States, which was subsequently acquired by Mediware. Dr. Sommers served as a medical director and Chief Compliance Officer for Great Lakes Anesthesia, LLC. He has held numerous leadership positions on various hospital medical staffs, including Chief of Staff.

He has worked in many areas including risk management, health care compliance, utilization review, medical malpractice, patient safety, Telehealth, and the medical-legal aspects of blood component and drug therapy. He has consulted with private industry and the American Red Cross on transfusion strategies and liability attributable to blood component transfusions and related drug therapies. Dr. Sommers has given numerous presentations at national meetings on patient safety issues, informed consent, and physician, hospital, and blood industry liability related to transfusion therapy. He has hosted numerous Grand Rounds for hospital staff throughout the nation on transfusion therapy and strategies, informed consent issues, and medical liability. Dr. Sommers teaches courses at Loyola University School of Law in Chicago, Illinois, as an adjunct faculty in the LLM program. He recently created a new Telehealth course for the law school, one of the first in the nation and completed a book chapter on Telehealth.

Dr. Sommers practices medicine at ProMedica Health System in Ohio where he is a medical director. He previously served as ProMedica Health System’s Physician Advisor. He currently works as a contracted Medical Director at First Coast/Novitas.
