About
Dr. Garfield's research interests are aimed at understanding mother-infant interactions, biological mechanisms related to maternal behaviors, and sequelae associated with adverse mothering in vulnerable populations and identifying means to improve outcomes for mothers and their infants. These interests encompass her background in physiology, chemistry, women’s health, and nursing. Dr. Garfield's previous research experience includes evaluations of perinatal depression in vulnerable populations, identification of risk factors, and exploration of oxytocin, inflammatory cytokines, and DNA methylation levels. In addition to her own research interests, she has successfully collaborated with other researchers, published several peer-reviewed manuscripts, and enjoys working with students across programs.
Research Interests
Dr. Garfield's research focuses on improving perinatal mental health of minority women. Her long-term goal is to decrease maternal health inequities to enhance maternal, infant, and family health. Dr. Garfield also enjoys teaching and mentoring students interested in maternal health inequities, perinatal mental health, and perinatal care.
