Online Definitions
Distance learning courses can be of various types depending on how much material is delivered completely online. Some classes are all online with no face-to-face components, some have a combination of face-to-face and online sessions, and some have real-time, virtual (synchronous) sessions.
Given the variations in distance learning courses, the following definitions have been adopted by Loyola University Chicago to provide more clarity for students.
Online Courses
An online course at Loyola University Chicago is one that requires no face-to-face meetings on campus; all course activities will be conducted via the internet. However, there may be specific times throughout the course when students are required to participate in real-time, virtual (synchronous) sessions.
Hybrid Courses
A hybrid course at Loyola University Chicago is one where are at least 75% of the course is delivered online. In addition, there may be specific times when students are required to participate in real-time, virtual (synchronous) sessions.
Blended Courses
A blended course at Loyola University Chicago is one where between 30% and 75% of the course is delivered online. In addition, there may be specific times when students are required to participate in real-time, virtual (synchronous) sessions.
HyFlex Courses
HyFlex is a course design model that presents the components of hybrid learning in a flexible course structure that gives students the option of attending sessions in the classroom, participating online, or doing both. Students can change their mode of attendance weekly or by topic, according to need or preference.
