Chmielowski Scholarship

The Eugeniusz Alek Chmielowski, Survivor of Deportation to Siberia, Officer in the Polish Army of General Anders Victorious at Monte Cassino during the Second World War Scholarship was established in 2010 by Eugeniusz Alek Chmielowski to promote and encourage undergraduate study and research in Polish Studies, with special emphasis on Polish language, and active participation in the Polish Student Alliance.  The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate student(s) currently enrolled in Loyola University Chicago Polish Studies Program (POST) in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.

Dr. Regina Bowgierd Scholarship

Dr. Regina Bowgierd, MD

This scholarship is established in honor of Dr. Regina Bowgierd, a psychiatrist, who helped many individual patients in Chicago, IL, for many years.

Dr. Regina Bowgierd was born in Brześć, Poland, under German occupation during World War II. After the war, the Soviet Union annexed eastern Poland, including Brześć, so along with hundreds of thousands of others, she and her family moved to the formerly German territory incorporated into western Poland and later settled in Poznań, Poland. After receiving her medical degree from the Medical Academy of Poznań, she completed a two-year rotating internship and began a residency in General Surgery and Urology at the Struś Medical School Hospital in Poznań.

 Dr. Bowgierd left Poland for the United States in 1971. After passing the exam required of all foreign medical graduates certifying their medical degrees, she did a one-year rotating internship in surgery at Metropolitan Hospital of New York Medical College, whose catchment area included Spanish Harlem, which was a good introduction to life in the United States.

For a variety of reasons, including a bias against women surgeons—unknown in Poland—Dr. Bowgierd changed her specialty and did a three-year residency in psychiatry with the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry at Roosevelt Hospital. After moving to Chicago, Dr. Bowgierd spent 20 years working as a psychiatrist at city mental health clinics, mainly at the Lakeview Mental Health Clinic. She also spent 28 years as a consultant for the Social Security Administration, ensuring the quality of decisions in disability cases. Even after living and working in the U.S. for nearly 50 years, she never lost her attachment to Polish culture and a desire to foster a knowledge of Polish history, literature, and the Polish language.

This scholarship is established to help students, with academic merit, to continue to minor in Polish Studies. Students of all ethnicities and ancestries are encouraged to apply for this scholarship. Polish ancestry is not required to receive this scholarship.

The scholarship recipient(s) should embody the spirit of scholarship and community service reflective of Dr. Bowgierd.

 

 

Kujawinski Scholarship

The Frank Kujawinski Polish Studies Immersion Fund at Loyola University Chicago was established in 2011 through the fundraising efforts and leadership of the Polish Student Alliance and Polish American Alumni Network, Loyola’s alumni organization, and friends of the University. The Frank Kujawinski Scholarships are administered by a scholarship committee headed by the Director of the Interdisciplinary Polish Studies Program in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. The Frank Kujawinski Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Loyola University students who are traveling to Poland to study Polish language and culture. Siberian Society Scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2015 by Eugeniusz Alek Chmielowski, President of the Siberian Society in Chicago, to promote and encourage undergraduate study and research in Polish history and culture with special emphasis on study of the story of Polish refugees and exiles sent to Siberia by the Soviet authorities.  The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate student(s) currently enrolled in Loyola University Chicago Polish Studies Program (POST) and is awarded by the university through the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. 

 

Polish Resistance (AK) Foundation Scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2010 by the Polish Resistance (AK) Foundation to promote and encourage undergraduate study and research in Polish History, the history of the Polish Underground State, and/or the Polish Home Army. The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students currently enrolled in Loyola University Chicago and is awarded by the University through the Department of History. 

 

Plocieniak Polish Language Fluency Scholarship

The Undergraduate Admission Office provides the application for the Plocieniak Scholarship and the following information to prospective freshman students: In memory of the Czabanski Family, the Plocieniak Scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen of Polish descent who are fluent in reading, writing, and speaking the Polish language. All candidates are required to take a written examination and interview on Loyola’s campus on Sunday, March 24, 2019, for the upcoming academic year. Scholarship amounts will vary but amounts range from $800 - $1,000. Prospective candidates must be admitted to Loyola by February 1. Students may submit the Plocieniak Scholarship by clicking here. 

Polish American Community Scholarships

Kosciuszko Foundation Tuition Scholarships

These scholarships support American students of Polish descent for graduate-level studies, such as masters and Ph.D. studies, at colleges and universities in the United States. Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $7,000 are awarded on a competitive basis for one academic year. Funding is for full-time studies. Scholarships are for the academic year Fall 2020 - Spring 2021.

Polish American Congress - National List of Scholarships

 

 

Year Abroad Scholarship

The Year Abroad Scholarship supports Polish language studies at the Jagiellonian University's Center of Polish Language and Culture in Kraków, Poland. Scholarships are awarded under the auspices of the Foundation's Exchange Program with Poland.

Students who are awarded a scholarship are accepted to attend the Center for Polish Language and Culture program at the Jagiellonian University. The scholarship includes a tuition waiver and 1,600 złoty per month for living expenses as well as $900 per semester in additional support.

Airfare is not covered by the scholarship. Please note that the Scholarship Selection Committee may elect to award semester-only grants.

Graduate Study and Research in Poland Scholarship

The Graduate/Postgraduate Studies and Research Scholarship supports research at various universities in Poland by American graduate students and university faculty members. Scholarships are awarded under the auspices of the Foundation's Exchange Program with Poland.

The scholarship provides a stipend of 1,600 złoty per month for housing and living expenses. In addition, scholarship recipients receive $300 per month of approved study/research as an additional supplement for living expenses. Candidates who intend to study/attend classes must apply to the university for admission and submit proof of acceptance/admission to the program. The Studies & Research scholarship does not cover the cost of tuition nor airfare to Poland.

Studies and Research projects may be conducted from July 1st, 2020 through June 30th, 2021 at state-funded universities and institutions of higher learning in Poland. 

The AY 2021-2022 application cycle opens: November 30, 2020, at 09:00 AM (EST) and closes: March 21, 2021, at 23:59 PM (EST)

  

Kulze Scholarship

The Chicago Society Foundation with The Chicago Society of the Polish National Alliance will award three $7,500 scholarships for Illinois students in the forthcoming year and in each subsequent year. Awards will be made to students of Polish ancestry with demonstrated financial need on a competitive basis. Deadline: February 15, 2019.

Eligibility: United States citizens and permanent residents (green card holders) of Polish descent who are beginning or continuing their graduate studies and who have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Scholarships are awarded for full-time studies only.Only one member per immediate family may receive a tuition scholarship during any given academic year. Applicants may re-apply, however, scholarship renewals are not guaranteed. Awards are limited to only two tuition scholarships per individual during the period of his/her studies.

All fields and majors are eligible for scholarship funding.

Leonard Skowronski Polish Studies Scholarship

The American Council for Polish Culture (ACPC) is pleased to offer two, $3,000 dollars each scholarships to students pursuing Polish Studies.

Narodowa Agencja Wymiany Akademickiej (NAWA)

NAWA offers full-ride scholarships to Juniors and Seniors in college to study in Poland.

NAWA's website states that NAWA is a new institution that was established on October 1st, 2017. It is set up to coordinate state activities driving the process of internationalization of Polish academic and research institutions. The mission of NAWA is to foster the development of Poland in the area of science and higher education.

NAWA goals:

• Support international mobility of students, academics and researchers

• Support the process of internationalization of Polish HEIs and research institutions

• Promote Polish science and higher education

• Promote and popularize teaching of the Polish language
