Crain’s Chicago Business Honors SES Dean Nancy Tuchman

Crain’s Chicago Business has named Nancy C. Tuchman, PhD, founding dean of Loyola University Chicago’s School of Environmental Sustainability (SES), among their 2024 Notable Leaders in Sustainability. The honor recognizes Tuchman’s accomplishments at Loyola and her impact in advancing environmental education and stewardship.

Dean Nancy Tuchman, PhD, was among the 2024 Notable Leaders in Sustainability recognized in Crain's Chicago Business.

Throughout her 35-year career at Loyola University Chicago, Nancy Tuchman has been a driving force in incorporating environmental sustainability into the university’s operations and academic programs. Tuchman took on the role of director of the newly founded Institute for Environmental Sustainability (IES) in 2013, with the charge of building an interdisciplinary school of the environment and bringing Loyola to national prominence in environmental science and sustainability.

In 2020, the university expanded IES to establish the School of Environmental Sustainability, Loyola’s newest school and the first school of sustainability at any Jesuit university worldwide. Under Tuchman’s leadership, SES has developed eight interdisciplinary undergraduate programs, launched a master’s degree program in environmental science and sustainability, nearly tripled the school’s faculty, and expanded student enrollment to over 500 annually.

Building on two decades of investments in education, research, and action addressing the planetary ecological crisis, Tuchman’s leadership has consistently placed Loyola in the top 5 percent of greenest colleges in the nation.
