Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) consists of regularly scheduled, out-of-class group study sessions driven by students’ needs. Sessions are facilitated by trained peer leaders (SI Leaders) who utilize collaborative activities to ensure peer-to-peer interaction in small groups (UMKC 2018).
Where can I find the SI session schedule?
You will be able to find the SI Session Schedule on our homepage starting the 2nd week of classes and is updated every Friday for the following week. SI sessions begin the second week of classes. Check back regularly for updates to the schedule.
How do I use Zoom for online SI sessions?
If students have never used Zoom before, they are encouraged to login to https://luc.zoom.us/ using their LUC UVID and password prior to the session. Then, download the Zoom program (on laptops) or app (on smartphones/tablets).
If the student does not have access to a webcam, microphone, or the internet, the student is encouraged to reach out to their SI Leader and/or Tutoring Center staff (tutoringcenter@luc.edu) for alternative options.
If Zoom is not working, students are encouraged to review the Zoom participant’s guide, call ITS at 773-508-4487, or email ITS at helpdesk@luc.edu.
If the link is not working or the SI Leader is not present at the designated time, please email the student leader or tutoringcenter@luc.edu.
Who is an SI Leader?
SI Leaders are upperclass student leaders who have already taken the SI-sponsored course and excelled. They have then gone through a rigorous interview and training program. SI leaders attend all assigned class lectures and hold 3 50-minute SI sessions each week that combine "what to learn" with "how to learn it."
What can a student expect in an SI session? What is expect of the student?
Students can expect to review notes, discuss and participate in activities around materials/ lecture, review and predict test questions, and work out problems together. Students are expected to bring their notes, textbook, and any other study materials to SI sessions.
Is SI drop-in or appointment based?
SI sessions are voluntary and are drop-in. No appointment is required. If a student does not have an SI leader in their course, students are welcome to use any of the same course's SI sessions.
What are the times and location for SI?
SI sessions are scheduled Sundays afternoon/evenings and typically between 3-9 pm Mondays through Thursdays. SI sessions will be online for spring 2021.

How does a course become supported by SI?
The courses supported by SI are historically difficult in nature due to their content. We have identified that these course have high "DFW rates" meaning that a large number of students receive D and F grades or withdraw from the course.
